ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/26/2009 ) — Due to a low number of entries, the Minnesota Land Rent Survey was unable to generate a report for 2009, University of Minnesota Extension educators report.
The survey requires 20 or more responses per county to be statistically valid. A total of 208 entries came from 57 counties out of the 86 counties surveyed, however, just two counties turned in 13 responses, with 11 from another. Responses from all other counties ranged from 0 to 9 responses. Operators represented 46.2 percent of the respondents, landowners accounted for 45.2 percent and 8.7 percent responded as both operator and landowner.
A source of information that may be helpful to operators, landowners and ag professionals making land rental decisions is a document titled “Cropland Rental Rates for MN Counties” dated July 2009. The document is updated each year and reflects data gathered through the MnSCU Adult Farm Management Program and the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association. The numbers are actual rents paid by program participants. The data is historical in nature and does not reflect on what land rents might be in the future. However, the document contains several years of data, enabling one to examine trends in land rent.
